February 2 nd is World Wetlands Day! Celebrated annually, World Wetlands Day aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. Today, The Clinch Coalition joins in support of the Dogwood Alliance’s efforts to save Okefenokee Swamp. From our environmental partner: “The federal government recently changed rules in the Clean Water Act that allows Twin Pines Minerals, LLC to proceed with its 600-acre heavy mineral sand mine without any federal oversight. The proposed mine sits next to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, the largest blackwater wetlands in North America and one of the world’s largest intact freshwater ecosystems. Now, only the state of Georgia can ensure that the Okefenokee will not be harmed by this and other mines that might follow. Urge Governor Brian Kemp to save Okefenokee Swamp and encourage him to request a study to determine how the Okefenokee Swamp could be impacted by mining. Non-Georgia residents can call Governor Kemp’s office at (404) 656-1776.
